Blogging for your contractor business is a great way to increase SEO on your site. However, a lot of business owners struggle with what to write. Also, there are certain things you should do for every blog post for SEO. When the team here at Contractor Charlie writes blogs for our clients, we make sure we do all of these steps.
Here is what you need to know to write a blog post that gets traffic:
Spend Time on Keyword Research
One of the best ways to get more traffic to your posts is to write about something people are searching for online and on your website. There are a few ways you can find relevant keywords for your blog posts:
Check Your Own Analytics
A great place to start with keyword research is to look at your own analytics. If you don’t already have Google analytics installed, then now is the time to do that. It will give you the information you need to see what’s bringing people to your website.
If you are receiving organic search traffic, the analytics will show you the terms. Not all terms will be available, but higher volume searched terms will display. Often times, you will find full questions as the search results. Use those as titles and write blogs that answer the questions.
Look at a Free Keyword Tool
There are several free keyword tools available online. Our favorite is Ubersuggest that’s put out by Neil Patel. The tool allows you to put in a keyword you are considering and then gives you many suggestions. Also, you can put in your website address or any competitor to see what they are ranking for.
Use Google Auto-fill and Related Search Terms
When you start typing a keyword into the Google search bar, sometimes it will auto-fill with search suggestions. Use the phrases that Google suggests in your blog posts. Also, after you click the suggestion, scroll to the bottom of the search results page to find the related search terms.
Use Headings to Create an Outline
Headings are important in SEO copywriting, because it lets the bots that crawl a page read your content quickly. Your headings should be descriptive and use keywords you are trying to target. Not only is this good for your SEO, but it makes it easier for a user to find the information they are looking for.
Each heading you create needs to be formatted as a Header 2, 3, or 4. There should only be a single Header 1, which is the title of the post. Header 2 is like a chapter title and will tell the reader what type of information they’ll find in those sections. Header 3 is a sub-header to Header 2, and Header 4 is a sub-header to Header 3.
The best way to write a blog post is to create a title, and then create 4-5 headers. Then, go in and fill out the sections with relevant information. This will keep your content organized and valuable to the reader.
Add a Call to Action in The Post
End all of your posts with a call to action. This is where you will tell the reader exactly what you want them to do next. If you want them to call you, then state that in the header. If you want them to fill out a form, make sure you provide a link to the form. For newsletter signups, tell them where to go to sign-up.
